Fix JSON-LD syntax, then check the page facts

Understand the difference between parseable JSON-LD, truthful page information and eligibility for a search feature, using a practical example.

Finding a script is only the beginning

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE · CHECKED 12 OCTOBER 2026

Structured data describes what a page represents in a format software can parse. A script's presence does not establish that it describes the right facts or qualifies for a search feature.

A teaching example: the trailing comma

This illustrative snippet is invalid JSON, not an observed problem on Citable or a customer website:

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"WebApplication","name":"Example tool",}

Removing the final comma repairs its JSON syntax:

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"WebApplication","name":"Example tool"}

That repair alone does not confirm that WebApplication fits the visible page, that its properties are accurate or that Google supports a rich result for it.

A real example from Citable

On 12 October 2026, Citable's homepage initial HTML contained WebApplication and WebSite JSON-LD. This shortened extract comes from the actual application markup:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "WebApplication",
  "name": "Citable 2.0",
  "url": "https://citableaudit.com/",
  "applicationCategory": "BusinessApplication",
  "isAccessibleForFree": true
}

The public application is free during the current beta. The extract describes that application without invented ratings, customer endorsements or professional credentials.

Check three different questions

  1. Can it be parsed? Inspect the initial HTML and fix genuine JSON syntax errors. Markup added only after JavaScript runs may not be observed by Citable.
  2. Is it accurate? Choose the schema type and facts that describe visible content. Do not copy a generic example onto an unrelated page.
  3. Does the search feature support it? Use the relevant specialist schema tools and Google's feature-specific requirements. Our basic check is not a complete schema validator.

Use the audit form to inspect observed markup and its evidence. A passing checklist does not guarantee ranking, rich results or AI citations.

FROM DISCOVERY TO TRUST

Why AI search visibility matters

When an AI answer cites your work, readers can follow the source to your website. Clear, accessible content makes your expertise easier to understand and verify.

Relevant visits

Help readers exploring your topic find the original page. Visits and conversions still need separate measurement.

Verifiable expertise

Give researchers clear facts, authorship and sources they can check. Publish evidence worth referencing.

A shared action plan

Connect marketing priorities with concrete technical tasks your developer can review.

Educational links, not integrations or endorsements. Citable checks your page; it does not query these services, measure actual citations or guarantee inclusion.

WHAT THE SCORE MEASURES

Eight checks, with their limits visible.

AI search tool permissions 30 · Initial HTML text 15 · Metadata 15 · JSON-LD 15 · Sitemap 10 · Heading outline 5 · Canonical/social tags 5 · Optional llms.txt 5.

Unavailable resources remain unknown. An incomplete audit displays a possible score range. Short text does not prove JavaScript dependence. robots.txt is a permission signal; this scanner does not impersonate provider crawlers.
