A WordPress checklist you can actually use
Start with one published article or service page, not your login page. This checker uses the same eight technical checks as the main audit. It does not log in, identify your plugins or confirm that WordPress is installed.
- Review visibility. For a site intended to be public, inspect Settings → Reading → Search engine visibility. The “Discourage search engines” setting asks engines not to index the site. Keep staging sites and private content restricted.
- Locate the real sitemap. WordPress core introduced
/wp-sitemap.xmlin version 5.5. An SEO plugin may replace or disable it. Open the actual sitemap and check its declaration in robots.txt. Citable reads declared locations; if none are declared, it tries/sitemap.xml. A missing fallback does not prove WordPress has no sitemap. - Inspect the published HTML. Confirm the page title, description and canonical after theme or plugin changes. Avoid two plugins emitting conflicting markup. Citable checks initial HTML, not a browser-rendered copy.
- Use truthful structured data. Describe the visible article, service or organization accurately. The JSON-LD result checks basic parsing; validate detailed schema requirements separately.
- Change one thing and rescan. Save a dated report before and after. Use Search Console and Bing to check actual indexing; use your own analytics to measure visits.
Example: if Citable cannot find /sitemap.xml but your working sitemap is /wp-sitemap.xml, verify the robots.txt declaration before rebuilding your sitemap or buying a plugin.
